Heartburn, also known as acid reflux, occurs when acid from the stomach flows upward. This causes a sour taste in the mouth and a burning sensation in the chest. Heartburn is caused by several factors, including what you eat, how you eat, and it can be caused by issues with your stomach.

Does apple cider vinegar help with heartburn?

No research indicates that ACV helps with short-term heartburn and indigestion – but there is some anecdotal evidence that it helps relieves symptoms.

That is not to say research decries using ACV – but the research simply hasn’t been done.

Fans of the method say that the acidity of the ACV, as well as the beneficial bacteria within, can improve digestion and alleviate recurrent symptoms.

One theory is that many people with acid reflux have too little stomach acid in a condition called hypochlorhydria.

While there’s no official advice for consuming ACV for heartburn, it won’t do you any damage, as long as you don’t over consume it.

If you are taking ACV to hamper heartburn symptoms, dilute it with water so the acid does not irritate your mouth.

One tablespoon to one cup of water is generally the advised measurement for taking ACV for health conditions.

If drinking ACV doesn’t work, there are plenty of over the counter remedies you can use to relieve the symptoms.

Avoiding certain foods and drinks may improve the symptoms of acid reflux, with substances linked to heartburn including:

• alcohol
• caffeine
• chocolate
• citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit
• fried or fatty foods
• garlic and onions
• mint
• spicy foods
• tomatoes and tomato-based products, including pasta sauces and soups

If that doesn’t work, Medical News Today advises a number of lifestyle changes to help stop symptoms:

  • Achieving a healthy weight – People who are overweight or obese are at greater risk of acid reflux. This may be due to the extra pressure on the stomach, which may push acid up into the food pipe.
  • Avoiding tobacco use – Smoking is thought to contribute to acid reflux by relaxing the muscle between the oesophagus and stomach. This allows acid to rise.
  • Elevating the head of the bed – The International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders recommend that people with acid reflux use blocks or wedges to raise up the head of their beds. Gravity can help control reflux.
  • Wearing loose clothing – Tight clothing, especially around the stomach area, can push acid from the stomach into the food pipe.
  • Practice good eating habits – Practice portion control and eat slowly to encourage healthy digestion. Avoid lying down while eating or within three hours of mealtimes.
