Visceral fat is also known as belly fat and is the type of fat which wraps around a person’s abdominal organs deep inside the body. You can’t always feel it or see it. In fact, you may have a pretty flat tummy and still have visceral fat. Carrying too much of this type of fat will increase your risk of later developing a heart attack or stroke. Studies have shown a certain type of carbohydrate should be avoided to help one feel less hungry, create less insulin havoc and help to burn your belly fat.
Refined carbohydrates which include food such as white bread, cookies, pastries, breakfast cereals, pizza and white rice; may taste delicious but the damage it does to a person’s health and waistline means it should be avoided as much possible.
These types of food have little to no nutrients in them and have also been shown to do little to one’s appetite.
In fact, eating foods like this will make a person feel hungrier after only a short amount of time from consumption.
For these reasons, health experts advise those wanting to lose their belly fat to avoid eating refined carbohydrates.
In a study published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, a refined high carbohydrate diet and the changes on the serotonin pathway and visceral fat was investigated.
Consumption of palatable foods high in refined carbohydrate has been implicated as a contributing factor to the epidemic levels of obesity, noted the study.
It added: “Such foods may disrupt appetite regulation in the hypothalamus through alterations in hunger and satiety signalling.”
The study delved into how refined carbohydrates could induce obesity due to the modulation of serotonin and dopamine signalling.

The study used rats with visceral fat percentage being used as a measure of weight gain during the trial.
The study found that after 29 weeks, the rats on the refined carb diet showed a significant increase in visceral fat.
It was also noted a higher level of triglycerides was found in the refined carb group with an increase in circulating lipids in the blood with a distorted serotoninergic signalling.
These factors could account for why those who eat more refined carbs have larger appetites therefore increasing visceral fat.
The insulin effect
Refined grains are digested rapidly, and this creates a sharp rise in blood sugar levels.
In response to this, the body pumps out a large dose of the hormone known as insulin.
Insulin is responsible for controlling the amount of glucose in the bloodstream at any given moment.
When this major crash in blood sugars occur, a person will often feel sluggish and hungrier, and the vicious cycle continues.
This can create an overrating cycle which becomes difficult to break all the while a person’s visceral fat increases with serious health risks increasing too.
By eating less carbs, especially refined carbs, it has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to lose belly fat.
This is supported by numerous studies delving into how carbohydrates in fact increase a person’s appetite and thereby increase fat.
More than 20 studies have shown that low carb diets sometimes lead to two to three times more weight loss than low fat diets.
This was true even when those in the low carb groups were allowed to eat as much as they wanted whilst those in the low-fat group were calorie restricting.
